It was the winter of 1992 when Andrea and Guido left for what had to be a different "on the road" journey. What then would become the last "assigned" story by the historic Geographical Magazine Atlante.
In the tradition of the great American trips the classical direction was from east to west, in search of the warmth and freedom of California. Their was instead from north to south, on the oldest road in North America, the Route 1, or US Highway 1, which goes from the Canadian border to the end of Florida, Key West, along the entire east coast.
The choice to do it in that season was also to underline the passage of the different climates that they would encounter: from the frost and snow of the north to the short sleeves and shorts of the Keys.
Such a journey also led to cross different cultures: the more progressive Northeast, the major historical metropolises of the continent, including the federal capital, the traditionalist and de facto segregationist Bible Belt, up to that all-American playground called Florida.
They also made some short targeted detours: to Jack Kerouac’s Lowell as to the “black” Atlanta opposed to a rural Georgia.
Thirty years later this is the celebration of a way of doing travel reportages that no longer exists, but also of a deeply changed nation.
The story has been revised. More photos (all on film, of course) have been recovered from the archives and adjusted. And Massimo Morello, then editor of Atlante magazine, has added a foreword that is a short story of the Geographical publishing world.

Era l'inverno del 1992 quando Andrea e Guido partivano per quello che doveva essere un diverso"on the road". Un viaggio che sarebbe diventato l'ultima storia "assegnata" della storica rivista geografica Atlante.
Nella tradizione dei grandi viaggi americani la direzione classica era da est a ovest, alla ricerca del calore e della libertà Californiana. Il loro era invece da nord a sud, sulla strada più antica del Nord America, la Route 1, o US Highway1, che va dal confine canadese fino alla fine della Florida, Key West, seguendo tutta la costa orientale.
La scelta di farlo in quella stagione serviva anche a sottolineare il passaggio dei diversi climi che avrebbero incontrato: dal gelo e la neve del nord alle maniche corte e i pantaloncini del sud.
Tale viaggio ha anche portato ad attraversare culture diverse: i più progressisti stati del nord-est, le principali metropoli storiche del continente, compresa la capitale federale, la tradizionalista e de facto segregazionista Bible Belt, fino a quel parco giochi tutto americano chiamato Florida. Hanno anche fatto alcune brevi deviazioni mirate: alla Lowell di Jack Kerouac e verso la "nera" Atlanta contrapposta a una Georgia rurale.
Trent'anni dopo questa è la celebrazione di un modo di fare reportage di viaggio che non esiste più, ma anche di una nazione profondamente cambiata.
La storia è stata rivista. Altre foto (tutte su film, ovviamente) sono state recuperate dagli archivi e aggiustate. E Massimo Morello, allora ddirettore di Atlante, ha aggiunto una prefazione che è una breve storia del mondo editoriale geografico.
